Èze
A medieval eagle's nest with the finest view on the Riviera.

Between Nice and Monaco, high above the Mediterranean, the village of Èze clings to a steep rocky peak. At more than 400 metres' height, this 'village perché' is one of the most beautiful and enchanting mountain villages on the whole Côte d'Azur — a fairy-tale counterpart to the fashionable seaside resorts on the coast. Anyone who loves picturesque villages and sweeping views should not skip Èze during a stay in Cannes.
A medieval eagle's nest
Èze has remained unspoilt over the centuries. Cars stay below; you explore the village entirely on foot, through a tangle of cobbled alleys, steps and vaulted passages. Among the carefully restored stone houses, garlanded with flowers and climbing plants, artists, artisans and small boutiques have set up their studios. Behind every bend a new, picturesque scene awaits. The name 'eagle's nest' is therefore no exaggeration: the village seems to hang above the sea like a bird of prey's eyrie.
The Jardin Exotique
Right at the top of the village, on the remains of a medieval castle, lies the Jardin Exotique d'Èze. This terraced garden full of cacti, succulents and Mediterranean plants offers a truly breathtaking panorama: on clear days the view reaches far into the distance along the coast, sometimes as far as Saint-Tropez. It is one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Riviera and the garden alone is worth a visit. Among the plants there are also sculptures that give the whole a dreamlike atmosphere.
The Sentier Nietzsche
Active visitors can walk the famous Sentier Nietzsche, the steep footpath that connects the mountain village with the coastal resort of Èze-sur-Mer. The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche walked here and was inspired by the path while writing part of his work. The descent (or climb) is rewarded with beautiful vistas over the sea, although the path is steep and rocky — sturdy shoes are a must.
Scents and crafts
Èze is also known for its connection with the art of perfume. At the foot of the village lies a perfumery where you can learn more about the production of fragrances — a reference to nearby Grasse, the world capital of perfume. In the alleys of the village you will also find studios, little galleries and small shops with local artwork and craft, ideal for a special souvenir.
Two villages, one name
It is good to know that there are really two Èzes: the famous medieval mountain village high on the rock, and Èze-sur-Mer below by the coast, with a train station and access to the water. The Sentier Nietzsche connects the two. Those who come by train can walk up from the coast or take the bus; those who come by car park at the mountain village. Both parts together make a visit extra varied.
Practical
Èze lies about three quarters of an hour's drive from Cannes, towards Monaco, and combines excellently with a day in Nice or Menton. Wear sturdy shoes for the steep streets and, if possible, come early or late in the day, when the village is at its quietest and most atmospheric. Take a look at the apartment and the availability and put this enchanting eagle's nest on your list.
