Lérins Islands

A boat trip to two green islands full of nature and history, right off the coast of Cannes.

Lérins Islands

Directly opposite the Boulevard de la Croisette lie the Lérins Islands, a green oasis a stone's throw from the bustle of the city. From the old harbour of Cannes you reach them by boat in about 15 minutes. The little archipelago counts four islands, two of which can be visited — a wonderful respite of calm, pine forests and clear water facing the fashionable coast. For anyone staying in our apartment in Le Suquet, it is one of the loveliest and easiest day trips: from the Vieux-Port you simply step aboard. Discover more in our surroundings.

A green oasis off the coast

The Lérins Islands form a surprising contrast with the glamour of Cannes. No cars, no busy boulevards, but pine trees, eucalyptus, scrubland and the scent of the sea. The islands are largely protected nature reserve, which explains the calm and the unspoilt atmosphere. The clear, shallow water around the coast turns turquoise on sunny days and invites you to swim and snorkel.

Sainte-Marguerite and Fort Royal

The largest island is Sainte-Marguerite, covered with fragrant pine and eucalyptus woods crisscrossed by shady walking paths. All around lie small coves where you can swim and snorkel in crystal-clear water. The island is dominated by Fort Royal, a fortress strengthened by Vauban that long served as a state prison. The mysterious 'Man in the Iron Mask' is said to have been imprisoned here, a riddle that still captures the imagination and has inspired countless writers and filmmakers. Today the fort houses the Musée de la Mer, with archaeological finds from Roman and Saracen shipwrecks recovered off the coast.

Saint-Honorat and the abbey

Sail on to the smaller Saint-Honorat, which has belonged to a community of monks since the year 410. They still inhabit the Abbey of Lérins and tend their own vineyards among the pines. The wine and liqueur of the monks enjoy an excellent reputation and are mainly sold on site or through the abbey. Walk along the fortified old abbey, which juts above the water like a small castle, and the little chapels along the coast, or simply withdraw for a moment of calm and reflection. The island breathes a serene, timeless atmosphere that you will not soon forget.

Walking, swimming and picnicking

The Lérins Islands lend themselves perfectly to an active yet relaxed day. You can walk around both islands on well-maintained paths, stopping along the way for a dip in a hidden cove and a picnic in the shade of the pines. On Sainte-Marguerite a walk around the entire island is easily done; on Saint-Honorat the path follows the coast and the old chapels. Don't forget your sun hat and plenty of water.

Practical

Boats to both islands depart regularly from the Vieux-Port of Cannes throughout the year; each island has its own ferry service. Facilities on the islands are limited, so bring enough water and perhaps a picnic, especially for a visit to peaceful Saint-Honorat. Good walking shoes and swimming gear make this day trip one of the finest excursions from Cannes. Combine the visit with a day in Cannes itself or an exploration of the wider Côte d'Azur in our surroundings. Take a look at the apartment and the available dates and plan your boat trip to the islands.
