Monaco & Monte-Carlo

The luxurious principality of the Grimaldis, an hour's drive from Cannes.

Monaco & Monte-Carlo

Monaco is, after Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, yet few places radiate so much glamour, history and zest for life. The principality lies about 55 kilometres east of Cannes and, despite the distance, makes an unforgettable day trip — especially if you take the route along the spectacular coastal road, with one panorama over the Mediterranean after another. From our apartment in Le Suquet you cross into a world of superyachts, casinos and princely grandeur. Discover more in our surroundings.

The smallest principality

On an area of barely two square kilometres, Monaco has developed into one of the most prosperous and densely populated places in the world. The principality is an independent state with its own prince, but it uses the euro and is surrounded by French territory and the sea. The combination of wealth, a mild climate and a spectacular setting against the rocks makes Monaco a unique destination that cannot be compared with anywhere else.

Monaco-Ville and the Prince's Palace

Start in Monaco-Ville, the old town centre that towers high on a rock above the sea — commonly known as Le Rocher. Here stands the Prince's Palace of the Grimaldi family, who have ruled Monaco since the thirteenth century. At the stroke of 11.55 a.m. the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place in front of the palace, a ceremony still performed daily. In the narrow streets around it you find the cathedral, where Princess Grace rests among others, and the world-famous Oceanographic Museum, which hangs dramatically at the edge of the cliff above the water and houses an impressive collection of marine life.

Monte-Carlo and the casino

The most famous district is Monte-Carlo, with as its radiant centrepiece the fairy-tale Casino de Monte-Carlo from 1863. Around the Place du Casino, with its fountains and carefully laid-out gardens, stand the chicest hotels and boutiques of the principality — as do the Ferraris, Bentleys and Rolls-Royces coming and going. The casino has a smart dress code, but even those who do not go in to gamble can fully enjoy the grandeur and the belle-époque architecture of the building and its surroundings.

The harbour and the Grand Prix

Descend to Port Hercule, the natural marina full of impressive superyachts, and walk along the water. Car enthusiasts will recognise everywhere the legendary street circuit of the Monaco Grand Prix, with famous spots such as the Fairmont hairpin, the tunnel and the Rascasse. Once a year, usually at the end of May, the city turns into the most glamorous racing circuit in the world, when Formula 1 roars through the narrow streets. Outside the race weekend too you can recognise parts of the circuit during a walk through the city.

Gardens and views

Despite the dense development, Monaco is surprisingly green. The principality has several beautifully laid-out gardens and viewpoints, where exotic plants thrive in the mild climate. From the higher spots and the rock of Monaco-Ville you have breathtaking views over the rooftops, the harbour and the glittering Mediterranean — ideal for leaving the bustle of the streets behind for a while.

Practical

Monaco is easily reached from Cannes by car or train; the railway station lies underground, in the middle of the city. Set aside a whole day and combine the old town, the casino and the harbour for a complete introduction to this unique principality. On the way or afterwards you can visit other gems in our surroundings. Take a look at the apartment and the available dates and plan your day trip to Monaco and Monte-Carlo.
